Warm wooly mittens keep hands toasty and hearts happy on cold wintry days. Jodi Barrows Returns to Alford Inn

Jodi Barrows will be here doing a workshop on Monday, October 10th from 10am to 4pm She will be teaching the Abe Lincoln Star. The class will be $60 and the kit will only be $29.00. The Advancing on II book and A Square in a Square ruler are required for the class.

Then that evening, from 6 - 8 pm Jodi will also be doing a free book signing, trunk show and lecture.

Jodi will be unveiling her new Block of the Month called "Kisses from My Beloved". This quilt is beautiful and comes with love letters each month.

Have you seen our classes for August? We have some really great things planned.

For Kids: Wednesday, August 17 - (11AM - 3PM) - $25.00

Summer is almost over and the kids are getting bored so why not sign them up for something fun! We have a great intro to sewing class for ages 8 and up (Sorry, kids only!). They will be making a simple pillowcase and learning basic sewing skills.
Carolyn will teach all the parts of the sewing machine and what they do. She will teach them how to coordinate fabrics to make a very cute pillowcase. Please come with machine and standard sewing notions. Since class is at 11:00, we will not be stopping to eat lunch so please make sure they eat beforehand.

For Beginners: Monday, August 15 and Monday, August 29 - (10AM - 4PM) - $60.00

If you have ever wanted to learn how to make a quilt, come and be a part of this 2-part class. We will teach you how to use all the tools of quilting. After this class, you will be able to make your first quilt top!Sing up for Basic Piecing now!

Alford Inn is centrally located between several regions participating is the Shop Hop. Why not take a break after shopping with us and spend the night in our retreat facility. The cost is $30 per person and we will have cereal and coffee available for you to grab a bite before you continue with you Shop Hop across Texas the next morning.
We currently have these dates available in September for you to plan your overnight stay with us.

You will have a private 4 hour lesson where I will show you how to clean the machine, load a quilt, program the computer for the pattern of your choice, and then quilt.

We are sooo into Minis right now...not only do we want everyone to have one of their own hanging in our upstairs retreat inn but we have created a club...

Here's what's happening:

We will have our first Mystery Mini Quilt club meeting on May 26th from 10-4. The cost is $25.00 (includes kit and lunch and instruction) or if you want to use your own fabrics $20.00( includes lunch and instruction). If you purchase a kit, please stop in and pick up your kit which will include cutting instructions. If you are using your own fabric we can email the cutting instructions to you or you can stop in and get them. You will need to bring your sewing machines & supplies and you need to have your fabric cut so that we can get right to the sewing fun! Then come join us and make a MINI while you enjoy food, fun and friends.

Each month we will provide another Mystery Mini Quilt Kit for you to make. Minis are fun and fast...you can use them as gifts, donations and or decorations.

After about 6 months of making Mystery Mini Quilts if you would like to donate one, we will have a Mini Quilt Auction and the money will be donated to the charity of the club members choice.

Alford Inn Mini Quilt Show

Here at the Alford Inn and Quilt Shoppe, we love our customers and retreaters. We love having you visit, and we really love it when you share what you make with us. We have decided that to show just how much we love you, we want to show you off here at the Inn.

So, if you would like to, you can take an *orphan quilt block or make a block or mini quilt, sign and date the block, as well as write where you are from, then send it in or bring it in to us and we will hang it in the shop or retreat. It will be a permanent quilt show with a little piece of each one of you, our quilting friends making a home in the Inn.

If you just have an unfinished block that you want to send in, we will quilt and bind it for you at no charge to you. Also, for retreaters that come for other types of retreats, like scrapbooking, you can choose a block from some we will have in the shop to sign and we will get it up for you.
Blocks should be a minimum of 10" x 10".

Our Mini Quilt Show will be better than any guest book!

Make It Monday! I did it!

I made this Dresden Plate using the Tumbler Template and the Vintage Groove Charm pack. You could easily get 2 plates out of one charm pack. It is my first Dresden plate. It was fun to make even though it did not go as I planned. :) It is intended to become a pillow.

Here's how it works.
We will share a tutorial, showcasing a product or pattern, then you can purchase it on our website.
Then, later in the month, when you complete your projects, submit your photos and we will have a project parade here on the blog and in our Flickr group! New hours at the shop and more!

Starting this weekend, the shop will be open later on Saturdays, from 10 until 5 pm!
Each Saturday, we will be giving demos of new tools and products throughout the day as well so please stop in and see what great things we have for your projects.

Monday April 11th, we will introduce a new feature on the website and here on the blog called Make it Monday. One Monday a month, we will be sharing video tutorials, and then later in the month, inviting you to share your photos and stories of projects you make with the product we showcase. There just might be prizes too, so don't be shy! Become a part of the Inn Crowd! We want to see your wonderful work.

We also now have a Flickr group set up where you will be able to join in and share photos and discuss quilting topics with us and each other. You will need to have a Flickr account to use the group. We had our Toothbrush Rug class taught by Sharon Hayes, as well as a yummy lunch courtesy of Pampered Chef consultant Marie Jennings. Everyone had a great time and there were some really great looking rugs being made.

Also, right now we have a great quilt kit on special, on sale for just $50.00. Included is the Take 5 pattern from Teacher's Pet, which is a pattern that is fast and fun for quilters at any skill level, and an assortment of cheerful bright flannel for the top and binding.(Backing sold separately.) Fun Classes and Patterns at the Alford Inn

Here is the Matchless Star made up from the new fabric line Vintage Groove from ADORNit. Two people made this using the same fabrics but arranged differently!

Great class, pattern and fabric! The next Matchless Star class with be April 28th from 10-3.

Just One Star Project: How you can help

"Moda fabrics is proud to be participating in a Quilts of Valor program co-ordinated by Marianne Fons...

The challenge is to piece, quilt and bind 100 quilts in 100 days using the
Flag of Valor pattern by Minick and Simpson.

The deadline for star blocks
is May 1, 2011 so that we can meet our quilt deadline
by Flag Day, June 14, 2011.

As the saying goes – “many hands make light work”.

We need 1800 star blocks to reach our goal.
Please take a few minutes to piece Just One Star block (click here for block pattern) using a medium red or blue and a cream background. Better yet, invite your small group or even your entire guild to make Just One Star block. Sign each block with your name and state.

Then we can truly say....the hands of a grateful nation comfort our soldiers!

We will coordinate the donation of the 100 quilts thru the Semper Fi Fund, a cause

that is near and dear to designers, Polly Minick and Laurie Simpson.

This is where you, our readers come in. Download the pdf pattern and make a star block! You can use fabric from your stash, or we will have kits you can pick up from the shop at no charge.
Then, for you locals, you can bring your block in to the shop, sign it with the special pen, and we will get it off to Moda for you.
You will not need to square up or trim your blocks. The folks at Moda will take care of that.
